Flavonoids

Secondary plant substances said to have various health benefits

Flavonoids is the collective term for a large group of natural dyes found in the outer layers of almost all fruit and vegetables, but also in some nuts and cereals, tea and cocoa. Chemically, flavonoids belong to the polyphenols.

Flavonoids protect the plants against harmful external influences. Various studies have found evidence that consuming flavonoids reduces the risk of certain diseases. The health benefits vary depending on the type of flavonoid.

For instance, flavonoids can reduce the risk of cancer, regulate blood pressure, lower blood cholesterol levels and strengthen the immune system. Flavonoids have an antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory action.

Researchers are working on increasing the flavonoid content of plants using genetic engineering methods.
